Apply to be a Volunteer:

After speaking with the Interpretive Naturalist Monica Barrera at our site, we encourage you to apply with the City of Edinburg to be a city volunteer. This will allow you to volunteer more than once per year at the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands and also at other city functions.

Click here to download the application or visit the City of Edinburg's website. Once you have completed these forms please turn them into the Human Resources Department (Personnel) at Edinburg City Hall. We will be contacted and, in turn, will contact you as soon as you're cleared with the city.

Special Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities:

Volunteers must call at least one day ahead of time to make sure a volunteer opportunity for Wednesday or Saturday is available.

Check out our Volunteer Opportunities brochure! It has details on the volunteer options we have and includes an application you can fill out and send to us. It also includes details on what you need to do to volunteer. Click here if you're interested!

Click here to download the Volunteer Guidelines of the EWBC. These guidelines must be followed in order to volunteer for the EWBC.

How You Can Help

Whether you are one individual or a group of 30, below are some of the common areas our volunteers work in.

Volunteer days are on Wednesday and Saturday mornings only - 8:30 am - 11:30 am (unless otherwise noted). Please refer to the lists below to see what opportunities we have and the days/times they are available.

Weekly Volunteer Duties & Tasks for Those Seeking to do 2-30 hours

Plant Rescue

Many times, plants grow in areas where they are in danger of being trampled on, or they grow in areas they do not belong. These are often plants we need in other areas of our gardens. Volunteers help us by potting these up, and taking them to our native plant nursery where they are cared for until they need to be planted along the gardens. Available for Wednesdays & Saturdays, 8:30 am - 11:30 am

Maintaining the Native Plant Gardens

There's always a lot of work to be done in our Butterfly and Dessert Gardens. Despite EWBC staff efforts, we can't keep up with those pesky weeds!  In fall and winter, we also put in a lot of new native plants. Help us keep this garden looking beautiful and continue providing habitat and food for countless creatures!  Available for Wednesdays & Saturdays, 8:30 am - 11:30 am

Native Plant Nursery

Have a green thumb? Help the EWBC Naturalist propagate and plant hundreds of native trees, grasses, and forbs!  Tasks may include transplanting, potting, propagating (many methods), watering and all-maintenance of the Nursery area. Also, participate and help plan re-vegetation efforts on our grounds.

Weed Removal:    Available for Wednesdays, 8:30 am - 10:30 am.

Nursery Clean-up: Available for Saturdays, 8:30 am - 10:30 pm.

Soil Prep

When potting up plants, we use special soil mixes to give the plants the nutrients they need to keep growing while we plan on where to plant them next! Having the soil mixture prepped ahead of time makes the potting up process a lot faster.  Available for Wednesdays, 8:30 am - 10:30 am.

Programs and Events

The EWBC has several big events every year (ex. Coastal Expo in the spring) that require hundreds of helpful volunteers!  Also, occasionally we will need help with our smaller programs.  Keep an eye on this page and on our Events page for the latest programs you can volunteer at!

Community Garden

The Edinburg Community Garden (ECG) has been in existence since 2008 thanks in-part to volunteers that have taught gardening classes, built raised beds, moved topsoil, and much more! If you are interested in being a volunteer and a caretaker for this garden, please call us!

ECG Watering & Care: Available for Wednesdays & Saturdays, 8:30 am-                                                         11:30 am.

ECG Weeding:            Available for Wednesdays, 8:30 am - 11:30 am

Data Entry

To inform the community about all the programs the EWBC has to offer, a lot of advertisement is required! Our program information needs to be input in various community calendars, and we need the help of volunteers to make this possible. Available for Saturdays, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm.

Center Upkeep

With such a big building, maintaining certain areas of it clean can be quite tricky! Help is needed in dusting, organizing and cleaning public areas of the gift shop and the center. Available for Wednesdays, 8:30 am - 10:30 am.

Weekly Volunteer Duties & Tasks for Those Seeking to do 30+ hours and 70+ (requires submission of application and approval by the city of Edinburg).
