Center hours have changed for the months of September-October 2012. New hours are as follows:

Center/Grounds Hours:
Monday-Friday: 8a.m. - 5p.m.
Saturday: 10a.m. - 4p.m.
Sunday: CLOSED

Bird Walks Switching from Wednesdays to Tuesdays

Effective February 7th, our bird walks will be switched back to Tuesdays from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Butterfly walk dates will remain the same (Thursdays) but the time will switch to 10-11 a.m.

Also, new programs will soon be posted on our website events page, as well as our Kingfisher newsletter, for the months of February-May! Be on the lookout for what we will be offering and join us!

Summer Internship at EWBC

Are you or someone you know looking for experience in the nature field this summer? EWBC is offering four Summer Intern positions. Details below:

Summer Admissions Clerk: This is a 10 hour a week position on summer evenings from 3 pm to 8 pm, June through August. The Admission Clerk will be collecting admissions and program fees from visitors, as well as giving information about the Center, our upcoming events, activities and volunteer opportunities.
Grounds Technician: We have two 15 hour a week positions to help our Grounds keeping staff maintain our extensive 3.5 acre butterfly garden and 2.5 miles of walking trails. Responsibilities include weeding, mulching, trimming trees,and maintaining trails and water features. The schedule is 7 am to 12 pm for Monday through Weds or Weds through Friday.
Nursery Technician: We are seeking applicants with some background in native plants, gardening or general plant care, to assist us with our Native Plant Nursery and Community Garden. Duties include watering, transplanting, weeding, and specialized plant care techniques. This is a 14 hour a week position with four hours on Saturday morning and two five hour workweek days.

EWBC also has a position opened for a part-time Groundskeeper 2. This position is a year-round 25 hour a week position, Tuesday through Saturday.

RGV Coastal Expo a great success!

The Edinburg World Birding Center, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and the World Birding Center hosted the RGV Coastal Expo on February 25th and 26th. It is a great success with over 1,700 children, families and friends on site for the two day event! We would like to thank our many sponsors and volunteers for helping with this wonderful event and we look forward to working with you next year!

Great bird sightings during the 2010 RGV Birding Festival

Last week was a great time to bird the Edinburg World Birding Center!

We had several tours visit our site during the week and many individuals or smaller groups coming on their own. They were treated to many great birds! We thank them all for taking the time to visit our beautiful wetlands!

On Friday, November 12th, we had our first birding group led ,in part, by Martin Hagne from Valley Nature Center. Right at the entrance to our Butterfly Garden the group spotted a Rufous Humminbird. They continued on to North Pond and had great looks at Ringed and Belted Kingfishers, Least Grebes, Yellow and Black-crowned Night-herons, and most surprising of all a Zone-tailed Hawk that flew over! Everyone got great looks at all of these. The group then visited our South Pond, which among other things, was temporarily offering refuge for a group of Fulvous Whistling Ducks. On their way back to the bus, visitors got great looks at a Greater Roadrunner and a stunning male Vermilion Flycatcher sitting on a fencepost.

Saturday's group had similar sightings. No Zone-tailed Hawk this time, but they did get great looks at a Green Kingfisher, which the earlier group had not! Part of the group also got a brief look at an Altamira Oriole in a Huisache tree along our North Pond. The Rufous Humminbird was refound not far from its previous location. The group was in quite a hurry, but seemed happy with what they had seen here in under an hour!

I really enjoyed the week of the festival, both getting to meet new faces and the chance to show off our park and the great outdoors.

Membership Cost to Increase in October

Membership cost for the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands and World Birding Center will increase to $25 beginning October 1.

The 2010-2011 annual membership can be purchased for $20 until its increase next month. Don't miss your opportunity to become a member at this discounted price.

This year's membership is good from June 2010 to July 2011 (13 months). Included in the membership is:

the 2010-2011 Roseate Spoonbill Patch
free entrance for up to eight family members
10-20% discount on most merchandise
discounts on selected programs
a quarterly newsletter mailed to your home or e-mailed
free binocular use while on grounds

The Roseate Spoonbill Patch or the membership card can be used to gain entrance each visit.

Entrance fees, donations, and program participation help the EWBC expand and grow. This support has allowed the EWBC to add new trails, garden features, and expand their public and school programs.

The modest fee increase will allow the EWBC to continue to offer visitors the best experience possible.
